NetBeans IDE

I was hired to the NetBeans team as a student - as a member of a "Students pool" (a pilot project aimed at testing outsourcing). However, in a relatively short time, I was accepted as an Intern and later on, as a part-time Software Engineer.

My main responsibility was assuring the quality of various components of the NetBeans IDE. I started with Mobility (JavaME modules), then I went throug VCS and Java Editor areas and ended up with modules related to Kenai Integration efforts. Except for the regular QE work (manual testing, writing JUnit unit and functional tests, updating wikis), I regularly replied at our users' mailing list and I wrote a blog. Many blog posts I wrote made it in official documentation and even to the NetBeans newsletter. I also contributed in the code base by fixing smaller issues and by implementing a functionality related to the Kenai integration (such as the project details view or the Kenai popup menu above the NetBeans project, or visual enhancements of the chat window).

Marián Mirilovič, SW QE Manager, Sun Microsystems Czech:

“I hired Petr as a student to our Students Pool at position Junior tester, just because he was far more knowledgeable than just average student. He proved this opinion in couple days, with highest number of reported issues (and with high level of quality of reports) I've ever seen in my career for people on his position.

He is well known for his enthusiasm since first days until now. Petr is customer oriented and he is very active on our mailing lists (answered hundreds of emails from our users) as well as tried to explain/help anybody who asked. After a while became one of the most active member of QE team and one of the activists for support NetBeans Platform team with his famous blog.

Last few months he was also working very closely with development to increase usability of Kenai support: he designed new solution, created prototype, went through negotiation process and discussed/explained all details to anybody willing to listen and at the end he implemented couple key features in NetBeans Kenai support (dashboard, view, chat, ...). I've got a feedback from couple senior developers and it's all about the respect to such young and such technically skilled person.

Petr is always trying to find out better and more effective ways to solve the problem our users are facing these days. Petr likes to be recognized as top-performer and he still wants to be "the best member of the team", but he is still a team-player. I am really proud that Petr grew-up and is still working in my team.”

Auction server iKup.cz

I came to iKup shortly after the project was massively advertised and after it started to suffer from several issues caused mostly by underestimating the traffic on the server. There were many performance and usability issues we needed to deal with, sometimes there were even inconsistencies with the auction winner and highest bidder.

In about a year, we (me and 2 more excelent developers - Ivan Baca and Jan Lucina) managed to fix all important issues and we made iKup a better place for shopping.

I personally implemented the system for sending weekly newsletters and several very visible pages and features - for example the item detail page, or the filters in the category pages.

A nice review of iKup is published on eMag (in Czech).
